Missouri Paycheck FAQ
Common questions about paychecks and taxes in Missouri
What is the Missouri state income tax rate for 2026?
The first $1,348 of Missouri taxable income isn't taxed. Then it's 2% up to $2,696, 2.5% to $4,044, 3% to $5,392, 3.5% to $6,740, 4% to $8,088, 4.5% to $9,436 and 4.7% above $9,436. These are the Department of Revenue's 2026 figures, and the same chart applies to every filing status. Missouri adjusts the brackets for inflation each year and can cut the top rate when revenue targets are met.
What is Missouri's standard deduction?
Missouri uses the federal standard deduction: for 2026, $16,100 single or married filing separately, $24,150 head of household and $32,200 married filing jointly or qualifying widow(er). Heads of household and qualifying widow(er)s also subtract a $1,400 exemption. Missouri has no personal exemption while the federal one is zero.
Does Missouri have local income taxes?
St. Louis levies a 1% earnings tax on its residents and on nonresidents who work in the city, and Kansas City also levies an earnings tax. Neither is included in this calculator.
How much Missouri tax is withheld from a bonus?
If the bonus is paid separately and tax was withheld from your regular wages, your employer may withhold a flat 4.7% or combine the bonus with your wages. If nothing was withheld from your regular wages, it has to combine them.
What does this calculator leave out for Missouri?
Missouri lets you deduct part of your federal income tax: 35% of it at Missouri adjusted gross income up to $25,000, falling to 5% from $100,001 to $125,000 and nothing above, capped at $5,000. The calculator leaves this out, so it overstates Missouri tax for anyone who owes federal income tax with Missouri adjusted gross income up to $125,000 (about $33 a year for a single filer at $104,000). On a combined return each spouse's share of income goes through the rate chart separately; the calculator runs it once, which is exact for a one-earner couple and up to $180.63 a year high for two earners. It also starts from gross wages rather than federal adjusted gross income and leaves out itemized deductions, the extra deduction at 65 or older or blind, and credits.
