Virginia's 5.75% top rate starts at $17,000 of taxable income, after an $8,750 standard deduction and a $930 personal exemption.

Graduated 2%–5.75%

Virginia has four income tax brackets, the same for every filing status: 2% on the first $3,000 of taxable income, 3% to $5,000, 5% to $17,000 and 5.75% above, so most of a typical paycheck is taxed at 5.75%. For 2026 the standard deduction is $8,750 for single filers and $17,500 for married couples filing jointly, and each filer and spouse also subtracts a $930 personal exemption. Virginia has no head-of-household or surviving-spouse status: those filers use the single figures.

$8,750 for single filers and married filing separately, and $17,500 for married couples filing jointly, the amounts state law sets for 2025 and 2026. They rise to $9,200 and $18,400 for 2027. You also subtract a $930 personal exemption for yourself and, on a joint return, your spouse.
